For
the first-time surfer:
- Look for a shallow
break where there is white wash
coming through all the way to the beach.
- Find a fixed point on the beach and
position yourself in front of it in the
water. Use this to help you stay in
position.
- Stay where the waves have already broken
so that you can practice your moves. It is
safer, you will be able to catch
more waves, and you will improve much faster.
- As you see the white water coming toward
you, turn the nose of your board toward the
beach. Center yourself on your board so that
you are not too far forward (or you will
nosedive) and not too far back (your
board nose will go up, you will fall off).
Your toes should be touching the back of the
board and your nose should be just a
couple of inches out of the water./
- Start paddling before the white wash
catches you to get some speed. Keep paddling
until the wave catches you and you can feel
the wave pushing your board toward the
shore.
-Place your hands on the board
rails (the sides of the board beside your
chest) and jump to a standing
position, knees bent.
- Always be aware of other
people and yourself when in the
water.
- While you are learning, look for a
board with good floatation and stability.
Not only will a bigger, wider board make it
easier for you to catch waves, it will also
make it easier for you to stand up more
consistently.
- Enjoy your surf!
